I’m sorry to say that 2DG will be on an indefinite semi-hiatus. Bert got a new job and we both have other projects we’re working on. There just isn’t the time or energy left to make the comic great. We will still make a comic or two when inspiration strikes, but it won’t be weekly anymore.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

I read the books a while back. The first 50 pages of the first book wowed me and the rest bored me. I can’t do love triangles without wanting to stab my eyes out. Sadly, as this is core to the second book, it ends up in the movie. They did well with what they had as far as that goes.

I really enjoyed seeing the other districts and the whole PTSD thing was intriguing. I think they should have gone a little more into the other victors and the game itself. They glossed over a lot of it in favor of walking through District 12 in the cold and being distant with one another.

A lot of people I know loved it and immediately wanted to watch it again. I’m not one of those, but it was enjoyable. I think it was better than the first (it would have gotten a 6, if I recall).

This movie really surprised me. It was great! After Iron Man 3 (the worst of that franchise), I had low hopes for Thor 2. It turned out to be hilarious, with great action and effects. The bad guys were a little flimsy (no real motivation, nebulous stakes), or it’d get a 9. I’d really recommend it!

I considered boycotting the movie to avoid lining the pockets of the book’s crazy bigoted author. But, I as curious and had a comic to do, so here we are. The effects account for more than half of this movie’s high score. The zero G stuff was good and the space battles / aliens were fantastic. It was really quite faithful to the book(s) from what I could tell. It’s a decent one, but if Orson Scott Card rubs you the wrong way, there’s plenty of other movies to watch. It’s not a must-see.

This was one of those movies where I recognize it as a 6 in quality, but it was more of a 3 in terms of my own enjoyment. It was one part disturbing and two parts depressing. Well done and all, but please never make me watch this again.

Mindless action? Yes, but entertaining along the way. I enjoy escape movies much like I enjoy heist ones – it’s a puzzle that you get to play along with the characters. There are movies that you should see first (Gravity!), but I’d say this one’s worth watching later on.

I have to admit, I wasn’t looking forward to seeing this movie. The trailers made it seem like melodramatic oscar bait. Besides, didn’t we live through this just a couple years ago? It was surprisingly good. Very well acted. The pirates aren’t simply caricatures, they’re well-rounded and real people.

Since watching it, however, I’ve been trying to think of ways the situation might ended more peacefully. Oh, and reading about the crew’s accounts you get to see more of the good ol’ captain than the movie lets you. Less selfless hero and more stubbornly putting everyone in danger. Still a decent movie, though.

We got to see this in IMAX 3D. It was worth both. I really loved this movie. Great acting, great CG, great sound/music, and really well crafted suspense. It’s less a story about space and more about people. I gotta say, I got hit right in the feels. Despite the scientific inaccuracies, I’d put this in the running for my favorite of the year.
